Meghan Walker Photography
Meghan Walker is a conceptual and fantasy photographer from Southern Wisconsin. Inspired deeply by film and music, Meghan uses photography to materialize the images that crowd her imagination, focusing on fantastical and historical themes in the landscape of Midwestern America.
Even though photography is the medium in which Meghan brings her visions to life, there is usually months of preparation before an image is completed. Most costumes and headdresses are handmade by herself, and Meghan often likes to create elaborate sets to have complete control over the outcome of the image.
My work does not begin and end with a camera. In fact, calling myself a "photographer" feels almost too limiting a term. I am a fine artist who designs elaborate costumes, sometimes out of natural materials like tree bark and paper, creates a set, takes a series of images, and then stitches everything together in a single magical, dream-like image. With all of these things combined, a single image can take days, week, or months to create. To have complete control over the image, I am often the model as well as the photographer.
Nicknamed "the Game of Thrones photographer," I have an equal fascination with the ethereal as I do with ax-wielding warriors. My images portray women and men in surroundings that are beautiful, dangerous, whimsical, dramatic, fantastical and shrouded in mystery.
About my Logo
I commissioned my thistle from the artist Casstronaut in 2016 to be both my business logo and a large tattoo (which I have on my back). Choosing a symbol to represent my work was almost instant as I knew I wanted it to be one that originates from my Scottish heritage. The thistle is Scotland's national flower due to its sharp, knife-like thorns growing along the stem. Legend states that when a band of Norsemen were approaching a camp of sleeping Scots, they marched unknowingly through a thistle patch. The Scots woke from the screams of pain and were able to defeat the army marching onto their lands.
Heritage, legend, danger, and beauty are all themes that I try to draw into every piece, and all of those traits are represented by the thistle. It is a resilient flower, growing in harsh climates and tough weather, all the while remaining strong, beautiful, and proud.
